The final countdown to World Design Capital 2014

The World Design Capital 2014 title is going to be announced in Taipei on 26 October at 06h00 local time. Cape Town will be celebrating the night before. Why? Because even if we don’t win, we can’t lose.

Join the design community for a pre-announcement party on the evening of 25 October at The Assembly and be inspired, Pecha Kucha-style, about what design can do for Cape Town.

Why is Cape Town bidding for World Design Capital 2014?

World Design Capital recognises that wealth, especially urban wealth, is created by innovation, not by factories or services alone. The designation is given in recognition that more than half the world’s population lives in cities and that design has become an increasingly fundamental tool to make cities more competitive, liveable and efficient.

Our bid is all about repositioning Cape Town on a world stage through design. Cape Town must brand itself as far more than just a city of beauty and leisure tourism.  To do so, it needs to offer the world evidence that it is also an inspired place of business, scientific and academic innovation, and a world-class centre of design.

Cape Town’s bid to be World Design Capital 2014 forms part of a broader vision to position Cape Town as a leading global city – a hub of creativity, knowledge, innovation and excellence – and to build on the City’s World Cup success and infrastructure.
